May the fourth be with you may be long gone, but that didn’t stop DICE posting up a new blog post about creating an entire new planet called Sullust in the Star Wars franchise for its upcoming Battlefront title.

DICE based the design of the planet on the Icelandic surface scattered with volcanoes and lava, so expect lots of heated exchanges online. The devs even took a trip to Iceland to examine the terrain to create an accurate likeness.

Anton Grandert, Concept Artist at DICE, developed the initial look through various sketches and said:

“We wanted to create a planet on our own, first trying out different ideas and then deciding on a lava planet,”

In terms of direction, he added:

“With black sharp rocks, huge land shifts, red lava, turquoise lakes, and white smoke…everything to make it really colourful yet imposing and threatening.”

The planet is mentioned in Return of the Jedi, but never seen in the films, so this is an exciting project for DICE. They also said structures on the planet will look similar to the Death Star.

How does that sound Star Wars’ fans?

  1. Ummmm. Am I the only one that noticed that Sullust is actually from Star Wars: Empire at War? The planet also has sulfur in the air and has a lot of lava. It isn’t quite as desolate, but it’s obvious enough that DICE didn’t just make this up. I think the planet is going to be great in the game, but I think that they should say where they got it from. :\
