Who’d have thought that a Capybara would be a deadly and fearsome creature? I certainly didn’t until I tackled Extremely Powerful Capybaras. This fun-filled local cooperative and online multiplayer game is fast-paced, fun, and challenging. Furthermore, it has a nice progression system, plenty of bits to unlock, and loads of monsters to overcome.
This arena-based rogue-like tests your patience and resolve. You’ll die repeatedly and curse your luck. However, you’ll come back for more as you slay every monster in sight. Alongside this, you’ll unlock new abilities and improve the prowess of your warrior, wizard, rogue, and so forth.

Extremely Powerful Capybaras has no plot.
If you love a story-rich experience, Extremely Powerful Capybaras won’t be for you. Effectively, each capybara must select their class and enter a random dungeon filled with danger. Once the timer hits zero, you must tackle the boss and complete your run.
Sadly, there is no plot to fall back on and no reason for the fluffy protagonists to be in each dungeon. However, this matters not. The action is straightforward, and staying alive is the aim of the game. Many of the core mechanics are familiar, and lovers of the genre will adore the well-trodden ideas.

Abilities and upgrades.
Once your class is selected, you spawn into 1 of 4 arenas. Here, you must tackle wave after wave of increasingly cruel creatures. As they fall, you’ll gather XP orbs or watermelons for health boosts. The XP is used to level your hero and select new abilities. Passive, attacking, and area of effect are to be selected.
Once you’ve completed your loadout, you must upgrade your selected abilities. Each skill has 5 upgradable elements, and once everything is maximised, you become an Extremely Powerful Capybara. However, this isn’t where things stop. If you select the right abilities for each class, you can unlock an all-powerful synergy. Furthermore, there are blessings bestowed upon the best fighters. Consequently, a little trial and error goes a long way.
Unlike its peers, this arena-based experience doesn’t feel as expansive with its skills and upgrades. Though this didn’t annoy me, others may find it a little shallow. Moreover, some choices make zero sense, and you’ll avoid them like the plague. This was unfortunate as it taints an otherwise great game.

Extremely Powerful Capybaras looks great.
Though the game design is basic, Extremely Powerful Capybaras looks great. The animation is smooth and there are no bugs or frame rate issues. The world can be filled with enemies, but the game never stutters. Additionally, there are some nice minor tweaks to each stage to keep things interesting. The audio is loud, but it lacks originality. The soundtrack is good, and the sound effects are enjoyable. Yet, they are familiar and rarely stand out from the crowd.
Playing this was a breeze. Dashing and automated combat ensure it is easy to handle. Moreover, a handy P1, P2, P3, and P4 helps to prevent confusion. I tackled every level and enjoyed unlocking the additional classes. However, I fear that others could find it repetitive and tiresome despite the inclusion of Frenzy difficulty settings.
Extremely Powerful Capybaras is a great addition to the genre.
The developer has added some nice lighthearted elements to an otherwise familiar genre. I loved the fun twist of capybaras instead of hulking warriors. Additionally, the ability to play with friends locally and online was great. Unfortunately, the unlockable skills and synergies were a little limited, and this holds it back. Accordingly, despite the shortcomings, I think it is great and I recommend buying it from the Xbox store.
