Snake.io has arrived on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in a surprise arrival. The game has enjoyed some monumental success on mobile devices. Whilst the game has been available for a long period now, I never expected it to hit gaming consoles. I wouldn’t normally boast, but I used to be a bit of an expert at Snake on the good old Nokia 5110. So much so that I used to have a friend watch me rack up huge scores. The fact that this was 25 years ago makes me feel old, and lots of inspiration has come from the original Snake titles.

Gameplay

Snake.io has the same slither and grow gameplay loop, but on a much larger scale. The development team have rebuilt the game for use with controllers 0n console, and they have done a decent job with this port. If you purchase the game on the Xbox family of consoles, then you can also make use of Xbox Play Anywhere functionality, allowing you to play anywhere you can access your Xbox library.

The premise is very simple: slither around the screen and eat. The more your snake consumes, the more they grow. Whilst doing so, you have to be aware of the other players on screen at the same time. Snakes that are larger than you have the power to break you apart and consume your remains. I had a great time growing absolutely massive and weaving around, trapping other snakes so they had nowhere to go.

Visuals & Audio

Snake.io has clean and colourful arenas with well-designed effects that make it simple to scope out enemy snakes. Customisation options allow for different aesthetics on snakes, which makes the visuals somewhat varied and interesting. When it comes to the audio, it’s very minimal. There are chimes for pickups and a satisfying snap when taking out enemy snakes, but beyond this, you won’t hear much else. In the past, I have played some mobile device ports that have been extremely lazy in converting the presentation or adapting the controls, but the development team have done well here to put out a well-presented game.

Final Thoughts

Snake.io has been ported extremely well from the mobile version to the console. It performs well across all the devices I tested it on, including Xbox Series X, PC and also my Lenovo Legion Go handheld. Gameplay is easy to learn but can be difficult to master against regular players. If you’re a fan of the older Snake games or you’re just after a casual yet competitive, addictive arcade-style experience, then this is well worth picking up. For a very reasonable price of £7.49, it will fill those spare minutes or hours with fun. You can pick up a copy of the game on Xbox HERE.
