Christmas is all about fun, celebrating, and peace for all people. Consequently, when you get an old-school slasher game that breaks the mould, I couldn’t resist. Christmas Mutilator is a suspenseful, slow, and uncomfortable title. Furthermore, it is brilliantly retro.
This first-person horror experience was developed by Galactic Crows. It plays with slow and arduous tasks to build tension and fear. However, when things kick off, the game takes an almighty heart-stopping turn. This is where this shines. The change of pace is brilliant as you fear for your life.

Christmas Mutilator plays on your fears.
The idea of a remote getaway is fantastic. Peace and quiet and a break from the rat race. Furthermore, a cabin in the woods is an idyllic setting. However, things turn south when a murderous stalker takes advantage of your vulnerabilities.
You play the role of Amelia. This loving mother has just finished setting the table when she takes an unwanted phone call. Her husband and kids are stuck in a storm, and she must celebrate alone. Sadly, this news is the tip of the iceberg as her night goes rapidly downhill.

Simple mechanics.
Horror doesn’t need all the bells and whistles. Instead, Christmas Mutilator lets your imagination do the work. Much of the opening action plods along while you wait for traditional jump scares. This tense opening keeps you on edge, even if it is relatively uneventful.
Once things heat up, you’ll need to use stealth, luck, and your wits to stay alive. The antagonist is a cruel individual who thrives on gore and violence. The protagonist, on the other hand, must be calm and remain hidden if she is to see the night out.
The action focuses on the isolated cabin and little else. This small area is easy to explore, and this helps you to master escape routes and hiding places. Additionally, there are a few items that may or may not be needed if you wish to survive. Subsequently, although the world may seem small, it is still interesting to explore.

Christmas Mutilator is a little too old-school for me.
The developer has used multiple filters to add a retro and dated edge. Although I liked them, they made it extremely hard to read text and navigate darkened rooms. Consequently, I had to turn them off. This was a shame, but the action unfolds nicely without the extreme filtering. The audio is fantastic! The music, silence, and sound effects create an awful atmosphere that makes your heart race. Like an ’80s slasher film, the silence creates unbelievably tense moments, which play with your mind.
The control system is a little clumsy, but this reminded me of early ’90s gaming. Consequently, many of the actions were rudimentary and rough, but it is reasonably simple to master. Christmas Mutilator has a handful of endings to witness. Word of warning, squeamish gamers may not like what they see. However, if you have a strong resolve, you’ll return to see each ending.
Christmas Mutilator is good despite its issues.
This isn’t a perfect game by any stretch. There are bugs, visual issues, and the controls are sluggish. However, it creates a horrible atmosphere, and I love the nod to ’80s horror. Accordingly, Christmas Mutilator is good, and you should grab a copy from the Xbox store!
