After just covering off the excellent Grind Survivors, I’m loving that I have another title in the genre to review. Royal Revolt Survivors developed by Team Warriors and published by Headup, the game is now available on Xbox Series X/S. Bringing that familiar chaotic survivors-style gameplay loop for a very reasonable cost of £8.39, it’s an experience thats well worth dipping into if you enjoy the genre.

Gameplay

Royal Revolt Survivors follows the same premise as the dozens of other survivors titles out there. Fight the hordes, collect gems, pick power–ups as you progress and try and see it through to the end of the run. Between runs you’ll unlock permanent upgrades and abilities that alter how you play and how you strategise your runs. The combinations you can put together is pretty impressive. There is that ‘one more run’ feel as you tick off the achievements and everything the game has to offer.

Whilst you can conquer everything lone soldier, there is also the option of local and online co-operative play. Supporting up to four players, the game has another layer of fun as you can combine powers to dissolve enemy waves together. Whilst I didn’t test the online functionality, I did play some waves with my eight year old son and we had a blast together.

Visuals & Audio

Visually Royal Revolt Survivors leans into a cartoony aesthetic rather than pixel-art. Environments are pretty basic with linear paths but with bold and bright colours. With a clear and crisp UI that doesn’t clutter the screen, it looks great on-screen. Perfomance on Xbox Series X is fantastic, with not a single hiccup through my 15 hours or so total time with the game.

Even when the screen is completely cluttered with waves of enemies, the frame rate is rock solid. Load times are instant and even the co-op multiplayer holds up well even with more going on. Audio does the job and normally you don’t expect too much from games in this genre. Feedback is heard and felt as attacks thud against the swarms coming towards you. Soundtrack blends in quietly with the rest of the action.

Final Thoughts

Royal Revolt Survivors is a surprisingly deep and addictive roguelite that blends in well with the rest of the catalogue of similar games. If you’re into the gameplay loop of surviving as long as you can and building stronger after each run, then you’ll easily get your moneys worth out of this one. The added bonus here though is the local and online multiplayer co-op options which are quite rare in the survivors-style roster. If you fancy picking up a copy for yourself for Xbox you can do so HERE.
