Well, the cat is out of the bag, and during today’s live reveal, DICE threw their cards on the table and showed us their vision for Battlefield 6. They promise the biggest leap in terms of scale, destruction, and player choice. We witnessed an in-depth look at the multiplayer, with creators on hand to showcase what the true gameplay entails. It’s no secret that Battlefield 2042 was a massive disappointment, not only to players but to the development teams post-launch. This is their chance to make a huge wrong right.
A Blinding Showcase
The two-hour showcase was streamed to the world via the Battlefield YouTube and Twitch feeds and was presented by DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson and host Rachel Tobac. The main goal of this stream was to showcase the multiplayer gameplay, but we got information on plenty more that will be on offer. We also had the release date, which will be October 10th 2025, on Xbox Series X|S, Playstation 5 and PC.
Single Player Is Back
It’s been a while since we have seen a campaign within a Battlefield title, with the most memorable being the Bad Company titles. We were treated to a 90-second cinematic trailer with not too much shown off; we do know it’s set in the year 2027. Will this be a solid campaign with great gameplay, or will it be an afterthought? Only time will tell when we get our hands on the game in October.
Multiplayer Modes & Maps
Battlefield is renowned for its classic modes, and the best of those return with some new ideas to play along with a custom mode builder with legacy content. Conquest, Rush, Breakthrough, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch and Domination all make a comeback. King Of The Hill is also present, along with a brand new mode known as Escalation, which is described as similar to Conquest with dynamic objectives that increase intensity.
It has been revealed that there will be nine maps in total, with a mixture of new and remakes. Listed below are confirmed maps:
- Dumbo – Brooklyn
- Aftermath – Brooklyn
- Abbasid & Outskirts – Cairo
- Eastwood, Badlands & Granite – California
- Battery, Limestone – Gibraltar
- Capstone, Tungsten – Tajikistan
- Operation Firestorm – (Battlefield 3 Remake)
- Talah Market (Battlefield 3 Remake)
- Propaganda (Battlefield 4 Remake)
- Downtown (Battlefield: Hardline Remake)
Combat & Destruction
Battlefield veterans will be glad to know that classic classes are returning with Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon, each with their gadgets, gizmos and roles. There are new combat mechanics such as dragging allies to be healed, ripping dog tags off necks, combat rolls and crouch sprinting.
The destruction is back to what is expected from Battlefield fans. Walls, floors, barriers and structures can all be blown to pieces. During the showcase, there was a suggestion that you can even blow ceilings out to draw out enemies from above. Vince Zampella said the following regarding destruction, “If you allow the map to be destroyed in any way possible, then it’s not the map you made. We make maps purposefully—for fun, sight lines, and performance. Tactical destruction lets you change the map without ruining it.”
You Can Play It Real Soon!
During the showcase, the surprise for Battlefield fans is that an Open Beta is planned for two weekends in August. Those who pre-ordered, took part in the Battlefield Labs program or were part of Twitch drops can start playing on August 7th-8th 2025. Everyone else can access the Open Beta August 9th-10th and 1th-17th 2025. Pre-load begins on August 4th 2025. The Open Beta will include full multiplayer access with several maps and modes. Platforms supported for this test are Xbox Series X|S, Playstation 5 and PC.
Battle Royale Is Coming
Love them or hate them, battle royale will be returning in Battlefield 6. It is unclear at this stage whether it will opt for a free-to-play model or be similar to Firestorm, which appeared in Battlefield V, which was only available to those who purchased the full game. It’s been said that there will be a standard mode and a “Gauntlet” mode, which has no details announced as yet. Battlefield Labs players will be able to test these modes in the coming weeks.
Yes, I Have Played Battlefield 6!
Whilst I am under NDA for many aspects, I can share that I have been part of Battlefield Labs. I’ve been lucky to have been part of the playtesting experience since the start. I can’t talk about any future playtests or share any images/gameplay footage. It’s been a positive program which will only do the world of good for the franchise going forward. I’ve tested many maps, modes, and whilst there have been some bumps along the road, this is what labs are for. I am confident that come October, we will be happy and back to what we all know and love.
