You’d be wise to watch where you wander in Gumball in Trick-or-Treat Land, Mega Cat Studios and Exquisite Laundry Pet’s upcoming 8-bit adventure for the Game Boy Color and Steam. Beyond the laid-back lands of Corndale and Flagrant Fields lies a rough-and-tumble realm called Mean Street, home to some of Trick-or-Treat Land’s more menacing inhabitants.
In the latest dev vlog for the game, Gumball in Trick-or-Treat Land’s creator, Adam Lewis Graf, breaks down the layout of this crucial mid-game area. Watch as he explains how he blurred the line between town and dungeon to raise the stakes and crafted the area’s multi-layered map, inspired by games like Earthbound and Pokémon. He also dives into the design and stories behind this seedy street’s spooky inhabitants, along with other new mechanics that bring the creepy borough to life.
“When designing a retro RPG, I couldn’t help playing with the formula to see what would happen,” said Adam Lewis Graf. “Mean Street was a really fun experiment, and I think it gives the middle chapter of Gumball in Trick-or-Treat Land a really unique flavor!”
