With the amount of roguelite bullet shooter titles coming to the console market recently, I have been spoiled for choice. Recently, I’ve spent countless hours with Greedland, Soulstone Survivors and now Bag Hero. Since the launch of Vampire Survivors, I have been hooked on this genre and actively seek out similar experiences to get my next fix. Developed and published by Happy Player, Bag Hero has a cheap entry cost of just £8.39.

Simple Yet Addictive

Bag Hero follows the same premise as almost every other game in the genre. Survive the hordes and collect gems to level up and purchase additional buffs and powers. There are ten classes and seven different weapons. What you choose allows you to strategically carve your paths in the 20-30 minute runs. You can choose to go full power for maximum damage or build yourself to be quick, nimble and in survival mode.

What I loved was the ability to adjust the difficulty levels based on your personal preference. This caters for casual and veteran players, so whether you want it nice and easy or a challenging encounter, then it really is up to you how you play. With a range of weapons that can be combined, it makes every match feels different. Boss fights can be intense, and depending on how well you’ve chosen your upgrades, you could slay them quickly or have a tough time.

Visuals & Audio

The presentation for Bag Hero on Xbox Series X|S is pretty solid, with a locked 60fps with no visual hiccups throughout my twenty or so hours with the game. They have gone for a cartoon-style aesthetic with a range of different environments with contrasting colours across the board.

When the hordes become more intense, this is when you’ll notice a bit more excitement on the big screen. Weapons feel and sound punchy and robust with visual effects popping off everywhere, depending on the build you have created. Sound effects are generally as you’d expect, with a high adrenaline soundtrack that blends in with the atmosphere of the game.

Final Thoughts

Bag Hero is the deepest experience in the genre, but there is enough content here to give you a good slog of sessions to get through. If you’re into experiences like the titles I mentioned in the introduction to this review, then you’ll no doubt enjoy many hours with this one. If you decide to invest in this one, then check out some other similar titles from the developer, such as Monster Panic, Burst Hero and Hero Of Fate, which are all excellent and cheap experiences to explore!
