I’ve covered plenty of mindless and short-lived indie titles recently. Therefore, there is no harm in covering another. I know this type of game gets a lot of stick, and maybe they should remain as a mobile phone-only approach, but I think they work well on console. Bun Buns is the latest colourful, simple, and quick-to-complete game I’ve added to my library.

CubicGames has developed this single-player and cooperative arcade title. Moreover, it has a minor puzzle layer that demands you pay attention. However, it is remarkably forgiving, and this makes it accessible to gamers of all skills, ages, and abilities.

Bun Buns is all about the cakes.

When you have a never-ending supply of cakes, you can forgive a few shortcomings. Bun Buns delivers no story and no real explanation of what’s happening. Yet, it doesn’t matter. Instead, it offers a constant supply of delicious cakes and buns.

The lack of depth may annoy some people, but I enjoyed the simple design and easy-to-follow action. Additionally, a screen filled with cakes and treats is never a bad thing. Even though that appealed to me, I wasn’t happy with the lack of progression or levels. This was disappointing as things could become tedious quickly.

Simple ideas.

Bun Buns is a pair-matching game of the simplest order. You are presented with a basket and an item to drop. As matching symbols combine, they change to a different item. This can cause a chain reaction as the action progresses.

This is where this game excels. There is an element of strategy and luck. Moreover, there are special power-ups that can change the course of a playthrough. These shouldn’t be relied upon, as you never know when they’ll arrive. However, it can be a bit of fun and relief when you clear your basket and continue your run.

The cooperative action is enjoyable, if not a bit hectic. Consequently, it requires plenty of clear communication if one wishes to succeed. I admit that it caused plenty of playful arguments as mistakes were made and games were ended prematurely.

Bun Buns is colourful and refined.

Bun Buns won’t blow you away. Although it is colourful and I liked the different treats, it is refined and underwhelming. Where it shines is its smooth animation and clean UI. This makes it nicer to look at and much easier to play. The audio is cheerful, cheesy, and upbeat. This energetic design matches the drama of the latter stages and works extremely well.

The controls can be mastered with ease. The layout is basic, and a few inputs must be remembered. This was ideal for younger and more casual gamers. Instead of focusing on what my kids were doing, I could pay attention to the game and let them experiment. Unfortunately, replay value is lacking. Unless you buy the complete edition, you’ll only have 2 levels to play. Additionally, it is pretty repetitive, and this holds it back.

Bun Buns is OK, but not great.

Bun Buns is an unmemorable experience that can be considered an “alright” indie title. It does everything right without truly excelling. The graphics and audio are pleasant but basic, and the core concept is a little repetitive. Therefore, it’s fun in short bursts. Accordingly, I enjoyed it and recommend you grab a copy from the Xbox store!
