ScootX is a physics-based scooter riding game where players will roam around various areas, exploring and trying to pull tricks; similarly to skate. You can also get off the scooter and run around exploring on foot… for some reason. The game offers a quite unique control scheme.

In order to move around, you need to hold down the A button and guide yourself with the left joystick. In order to jump, you need to flick the right joystick from down to up. It does feel a bit clunky when a lot of extreme sports games you speed up with the left joystick while holding a button and release it to jump.

You can also use a drone to fly around the map and explore the area if you feel like exploring. Or if you’re tired of your scooter, you can jump off and walk around willy nilly. While you run by default, for some reason, if you press the Right Joystick, you’ll run in slow-mo à la Matrix… Why the need for this i don’t know. Walking movement feels clunky.

The game looks… fine. Nothing really wrong nor spectacular. Each environment look fine; nothing compared to the Skate or Tony Hawk franchises. I got to admit, there’s a decent amount of customization options for your character and scooter; allowing you to give both a personalized touch. For some reason, the game lacks music. You can hear the soundbytes of falling and bumping into things.

One of the problems is the control schemes. While most extreme sports games uses the face buttons and left joystick to move around and jump, in this case, riding while holding A and having to use the right joystick to jump is incredibly counter-intuitive. Also the game lacks objectives and reasons to play.

ScootX feels like the alpha version of a game or a tech demo. Limited gameplay, no real purpose or reason to play the game; no goals to achieve or complete. The controls are counterintuitive; the physics feel accurate and well representated. There’s an interesting amount of customization options for your character and your scooter. All in all, don’t waste your time and money on this. I honestly feel bad reviewing this; the game would deserve a N/A score. There’s potential, but it’s not in this version.
