It seems that once I finish reviewing a bullet hell roguelike title, another one appears. Only in the last month have I played Soulstone Survivors, Greedland and Bag Hero, which all follow a similar premise in their unique ways. I always refer back to Vampire Survivors, which appeared to be the catalyst for this huge surge of experiences in the genre. It may seem congested, but the more the merrier, I say, with Sweet Survivors being the topic of this review.
Large Latte To Go Please
Even the most casual of players will get to grips with Sweet Survivors quite quickly. It’s a simple premise of attempting to serve coffee whilst fighting off waves of cats. There are a total of 11 weapons throughout the game, starting with a laser pointer. You’ll eventually have choices about what to unlock, with balls of wool and cucumbers being just a few of the options.
As you progress through the waves, you’ll be able to upgrade weapons and have access to other buffs like increased damage, larger damage area or faster firing rate. The beauty of the game is experimenting with different builds and seeing which works for you. It’s satisfying when you make the right choices and you witness multiple enemies in the horde being obliterated immediately.
Visuals & Audio
For a game with such a low price point, I was pleasantly impressed with the visual art style throughout the five cafe environments. Everything is played from a top-down perspective, with the aesthetics presented in a vibrant and charming pixel-art style. Whilst it may seem basic to some, it does well with the animations, effects and hordes throughout. I experienced no hiccups during my time with the game on Xbox Series X.
If you’re not a cat fan, then you may want to lower the volume a bit, as you’ll hear a lot of meowing going on. I can tolerate this with four cats within my family in real life. Weapons sound punchy, and other sound effects do the job. The soundtrack blends well with the visuals and suits the atmosphere with jazzy tones and some high-intensity tracks ringing through as you tackle each run.
Final Thoughts
Sweet Survivors isn’t sitting at the top of the pile in the genre, but it does bring that cutesy casual vibe if you’re looking for something a little more calm and less gritty. If you’re after all the achievements, then it’ll probably take you a good 10-15 hours, which is a good return on the £4.19 investment. If you decide on the slightly pricier version, then you’ll have some extra cosmetics and levels to play around with. Well worth a punt if you’re into the progressive auto shooters like I am.
