Hellbreachers is a cartoony 2D action platformer where players can choose from one of three characters classes and run through the game’s 50 levels peppered through 10 different environments. Each character has three different attacks. Players can choose from a knight, magician and an assassin.

Each character has a melee attack, ranged attack and special powerful attack. Ranged attack has a limited number of ammo and of course the special attack is limited in usage per level. While you can find silver and gold keys for their respective chests to refill your ammo, the special attack doesn’t reset until you clear the level. Boss fights are enjoyable and quite challenging.

To help navigation across each level, players can double to reach high platforms easily. There’s also a plethora of coins and gems to collect through each area; making this a decent challenge for completionists who need to collect everything. Each level is about 3-5 minutes in length. The game also allows a “level up” feature. As you progress through the game, pressing pause, you’ll be able to switch to a stronger “version” of your character class.

The game looks great; it has a cute 2D cartoony/cute-sy art style that will definitely appeal to the younger gamers in the family. Each of the 10 areas are uniquely designed with its own theme and each area is also overall well designed and enjoyable to run through. That being said, they are also done so you can just speed run through without having to kill anything. The soundtrack is a cute soothing score that’s a bit the opposite of an action game theme.

The game does have a few issues. The first being the long drawn out animations when attacking; if you expect to immediately hit when pressing the attack button, guess again. You need to time your attacks with the enemy’s distance to make sure you hit them before they reach you. The melee attack has way too short of a range. So if you’re on a boss fight with no ammo or special attack left, good luck with that. Also the jumping can be too high at times because you won’t see where you’ll land; on a platform or to your death?

Hellbreachers is definitely a fun little gem to play. Each character has their own moveset along with unique upgrades. Each level is about 3-5 minutes long which makes it perfect for playing in short bursts and this game is perfect for gamers of all ages. There are a few nuisances such as the insanely short range melee attacks and jumping can some time feel like a crapshoot, but as a whole, for the price, you could do much much worst. If you’re looking for a mid-size experience with insanely easy 1000Gs, Hellbreachers is a must play.
