Mutant Football League 2 is typical (american) football game with a twist. Players are (obviously) mutants and can pummel each other between plays. Each game starts off as two teams of 8 and each team has a roster of 70 players. Once a play has been completed and some sacked, you have a short window to give other opposing players a beating (or be on the receiving end of one).
When it comes to the core gameplay, it plays like Madden: choose your play and then go. Each players are represented by a face button to ease passing. The game also features a bevy of gameplay modes for hardcore football players. First up is Dynasty Supreme. This is where you’ll be able to have control over your team.

This mode allows players to create their own epic team, change players with drafts, play through multiple seasons, unlock player trades and free agents via the obtained Player Cards. You can also tackle both minor and pro league. All of this peppered with hilarious player management. Akin to EA’s Ultimate cashcow, you’ll unlock new MFL Player Cards as you play. They’ll unlock free agents and player trades, give you the ability to replace weak players by stronger ones in your lineup, and also add hall of maim legend players.
If you need a diversion from Dynasty Supreme, you can jump into a myriad of modes such as Quick play, Practice, Playoffs, Mayhem Bowl (think of it as the Super Bowl equivalent) and training camp. Once a play is completed, you can try to inflict damage on the closest player by continously punching until the next play.

One of the most entertaining features you’ll see that’ll never be in a Madden are the traps on the various stadiums. For example, one of the terrain has acidic geysers, mines or sawblades going from left to right on the field. You’ll need to pay attention to avoid the traps and if possible, lure the opposing players into them.
Another fun feature is before you’re about to start a play, you can bring up a menu that will allow you to switch strategy on the fly and Dirty Tricks (either on offense or defense). So for example, if you want to delay the game a bit, you can have your players kill the referee. However, beware, as this comes with consequences; the new ref will perhaps give you a 15 yards penalty (this means you need to go back 15 yards). Or if things aren’t going your way, you can bribe the referees.

The game looks good; nothing really problematic here, although it wasn’t built for the current generation of consoles and could’ve easily released during the seventh or eighth generation of gaming platforms. The stadium are unique and the team diversity is through the roof with 36. Each with their own unique and style. On the audio side of things, nothing inherently wrong. The voiceovers do have their funny moments, the game commentary is fine, but one of the commentators, who sounds like an alien, is annoying as all hell.
The game isn’t perfect though. There are a few minor issues that hinder the experience a bit. When you’re getting punched in between plays, you can’t defend yourself or retaliate. There’s also a lack of accessibility features to tweak the overall difficulty. Which leads to an issue where if you’re in the lead, it does feel like the A.I. rubberbands itself into the lead to make sure they win.

Mutant Football League 2 is a great, arcade based, alternative to Madden NFL 26. It’s over the top violence, goofy presentation and hazard filled stadium give the game a unique personality. And the gameplay is solid filled with a bevy of game modes. While it does feel cheap at times and lacks accessiblity features for newcomers to be eased in, Mutant Football League 2 is overall an addictive experience that deserves your time.
