Sometime a game launches and for whatever reason it completely misses your radar. Stories Untold launched way back in February of 2017 and I have only heard about it within the last couple of weeks thanks to Ben, a mutual on Twitter from the great team at Lost In Cult. Seeing Ben sing high praises about the title, I decided to give it a glance on the Xbox Store, seeing it listed for only £8, decided to give it a punt and jump in.

Initially within the first five minutes, I was everything but sold, wondering if I’d just wasted £8 on something that wouldn’t be able to keep my attention, but pushing on it doesn’t take long whatsoever for the game to pick up and suck you into it’s narrative. I haven’t managed to finish it all yet, but have completed the first two (out of a total of four) episodes and so far I can not recommend this enough.

It’s completely text-based gameplay but it just works so well for the atmosphere and stories the developers have crafted, blended with some very nice looking 80’s aesthetics

It’s certainly something different and does have some light horror and suspense sprinkled throughout, but nothing on the same level as a Resident Evil or Outlast game, so if you’re a little on the shy side, you might be able to stomach this one. This game is doing a great job of keeping me glued to my screen and the way it approaches the player is a welcomed breath of fresh air for me.

We do have our own Stories Untold Review from Complete Xbox’s very own Dan Boise from back in 2020, so if you’re interested to learn more, then you can go and check out Dan’s write up, although I will say if you trust my judgement, then I urge you to jump in as blind as possible and just roll with it.

It only came to my attention whilst playing that the developers at No Code are also the same team who have been tasked with tackling the Silent hill franchise after Konami have shown great interest in the gaming space again lately. After seeing Stories Untold I’m optimistic to see what they can cook up using the IP but for now, Stories Untold is one not to miss, so definitely go give it a look!
