Ubisoft has officially released Last Rites, a major free update for Ghost Recon Wildlands on Xbox Series X|S. Designed as a celebration of the Ghost Recon franchise’s 25th anniversary, the update lands alongside a fresh 4K at 60 FPS performance boost and a host of community-requested features.

Here is a breakdown of what players can expect from the new release.

New Story Mission & Fan-Favorite Returns

The update introduces a brand-new narrative mission where the Ghosts travel to Bolivia to hunt down La Llorona, a vengeful antagonist leading the fanatic cult “Los Penitentes.” Designed with a darker, more intense tone, the mission offers new rewards, including exclusive Operator Skins. Original English voice actors, including Nomad, return to reprise their roles.

In a surprise move, Ubisoft has also permanently brought back the highly requested Predator mission, preserving the iconic, challenging boss fight exactly as fans remember it.

Sandbox Customization & Roleplaying Features

To support the game’s active mil-sim and roleplaying community, Last Rites overhaul player freedom with new “Ghost Parameters” inspired by Ubisoft’s Breakpoint:

  • Granular UI & Audio Tweak: Players can now turn off throwable trajectory previews and object interaction shaders, along with their associated audio cues.

  • Hardcore Survival Mechanics: Options for tactical reloading (losing remaining mag ammo), limiting primary weapons to one, and restricting team revives.

  • World & Session Controls: Host settings now allow for fixed time-of-day, locked weather (e.g., perpetual night rain), and permanent destruction of SAM launchers and enemy alarms.

  • Expanded Co-op & Squad Options: Choose to run with 1, 2, 3, or no AI teammates, toggle friendly fire, and adjust specific difficulty sliders like enemy perception and vehicle health.

Free Play Weekend

For newcomers, Ghost Recon Wildlands is currently available to play for free on Xbox Free Play Days through August 9. Progress made during the free trial carries over to the full game, and the new Last Rites content can be accessed directly from the main menu without spoiling the main campaign.
