Paradox Interactive has officially pulled back the curtain on the next major chapter for its flagship grand strategy game. Crusader Kings III: By God Alone is set to launch on September 30, 2026, promising a massive overhaul to the game’s religious systems and finally granting a long-requested feature: playable theocracies.
As a core expansion and the centerpiece of the upcoming Chapter V bundle, By God Alone shifts the focus from purely secular bloodlines to the immense, often corrupting power of the medieval Church.

Playing as the Pope: Theocracies Arrive
The most significant game-changer in By God Alone is the introduction of Playable Theocracies. For the first time, players can step away from traditional dynastic secular rulers to take control of landed realms headed by archbishops or the Pope himself. Playing as the Papacy will grant access to unique resources, immense wealth, and unparalleled political leverage over the crowned heads of Europe.
To support this, Paradox is introducing Archdioceses—clerical titles with religious authority over geographical regions that operate independently of secular borders—and the College of Cardinals. Secular rulers won’t just sit on the sidelines, however; players can use their earthly influence to puppet clerical characters and manipulate Cardinal appointments to bend the Vatican to their will.
For players starting in the 867 bookmark, the expansion introduces a massive historical crossroads: The Great Schism. Dynamic mechanics will track the fracturing relationship between Western Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, allowing players to influence how—or if—the church splits.
This ties into a broader Christian “Situation” mechanic, a persistent system for Christian realms that governs the development and progress of the faith. Players will be able to participate in Ecumenical Councils to vote on religious tenets. However, straying too far from orthodoxy will see your practices branded as Heresies, forcing a choice between conformity and open rebellion.
| Key Feature | Description |
| Spiritual Fulfilment | A new system where traits and actions shape a character’s inner spiritual life. Sins and virtues now impact relationships with God and the afterlife, moving beyond just standard stress mechanics. |
| Monastic Holy Orders | Theological and research hubs that offer powerful bonuses to their secular hosts, providing “spiritual fulfilment” to protect rulers from damnation. |
| Dynamic Holy Sites & Cathedrals | Holy sites can now shift dynamically as religions evolve. Furthermore, grand Cathedrals can become centers of reverence for specific saints, elevating them to Holy Site status. |
Crusader Kings III: By God Alone will be available on PC on September 30, 2026. The expansion is included as part of the Crusader Kings III: Chapter V pass, but will also be available as a standalone purchase for $19.99 / £16.99 / €19.99.
