During my time writing about video games, I have covered a lot of simulator-style titles, with some more bizarre than others. Dating simulators normally come in the form of Japanese anime-designed experiences with reams of text to read through. They don’t tend to offer much in the way of feeling connections or emotions, in my opinion. Date Everything! from Sassy Chap Games and Team 17 may have popped the crown on their head when it comes to this genre. In an adventure where you’ll be dating household objects and building friendships and relationships, it only really starts to make sense when you get your hands on it.

Don’t Mind Me, I Have A Date With My Toaster

After being made redundant and being stuck at home, you’re sent a mystery package which contains a pair of glasses. These aren’t just any normal glasses, though; these are known as Dateviators. Putting these glasses on will allow you to speak to your household objects, which morph into people once you interact with them. Throughout the game, there are around 100 dateable characters and you’ll find yourself dating piles of laundry, the refrigerator, your bed and more.

Before you know it, you’re having conversations and flirty moments with everything and everyone. There are limitations, though, and you can only talk with a character once per day and a total of five interactions before you have to hit the sack and sleep. I did find this limited gameplay loop a bit frustrating at times, especially when some characters can be multiple items within the home as well. With so many characters, it does feel a little too ambitious and easy to get lost when you’re ploughing through the day-to-day process. I did enjoy that there are quests to partake in within the conversations you have with individuals, which may cross over into other characters’ stories, but I won’t spoil anything for you here.

Visuals & Audio

Date Everything! ran smoothly from start to finish on my Xbox Series X with no visual hiccups along the way. Whilst exploring the rooms, you’re within are all from a first-person perspective, and 3D rendered, the main draw is in the voice-acted/narrated discussions in the hunt for love. The art style is fantastic, with each character morphing from a real-world object into a person with their personality and style. Everything is bright, vibrant and colourful and blends well with the brilliant voice acting and well-written lines. There is plenty of wit and humour throughout your time with various characters, and some become more memorable than others. The soundtrack also slots in nicely and suits the atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

Admittedly, dating sim-style games aren’t usually my thing, believe it or not. However, as a reviewer, I like to approach experiences open-mindedly, as you never know if they’ll take you by surprise. Date Everything! is probably one of the most wacky and unique games you’ll ever come across in this genre. I have to praise the development team at Sassy Chap Games/Team 17 for their ambitious efforts with over 100 characters. You may look at the price point and ask if it’s worth it. With over 12 hours of my time poured into this one, I can say that it is worth your input if you are into visual novels and building connections with your microwave, fridge or front door. It’s certainly a memorable game with some of the quirkiest and funniest characters you may come across in a video game.
