Dead Reset tells the story of surgeon Cole Mason who was kidnapped and brought to an underwater facility and forced to perform a live saving surgery on a patient. However, the twist is that this surgery leads to death, but Mason is stuck in an infinite death loop that allows him to return to life knowing what happened. Make the right choices and find the truth.
Dead Reset is a new entry in the interactive movie genre; meaning you’re basically watching a movie, but at certain times in the movie, you’ll be prompted to make a choice that will impact the events of the game. Note that you have a small time window to make a choice, otherwise, the game will make a choice for you. Streamers can enable a Streamer mode where they are given no time limit to make a choice to get viewer participation.
One of the best features of this genre is that it offers a lot of replay value. Every decision you make has consequences where it could either lead to your death, impact your relationship with a crewmate or having of them accidentally killed. The game also offers four different things and a myriad of ways to there. There’s over 300 scenes to discover through your decision making process.
Dead Reset is a live action game, so it does look great. The environments are quite creepy and unnerving. Being stuck 20 000 meter underwater with a menacing threat is a great premise for a horror movie/game. Some of the decor unfortunately does look fake; such as the wheels on the doors; when one of the characters grabs them, they flail a bit as if it was paper. The voiceover/acting is pretty spot on for the most part. There are certain character interactions that comes off as straight out of a cheesy B-movie. The antagonist does a great job in her role; you really hate her.
Due to the lack of gameplay, there isn’t anything wrong and problematic with this game. Unless you don’t enjoy the genre, obviously this game won’t change your mind. Core gameplay aside, there a few details that can take you out of the experience like some of the paper-like door wheels and when guns are fired which looks odd compared to professionally made movies. There’s a bit of cheesy interactions between characters. I do wish they’d include a timeline feature which allows you to pick up following any decision you’ve made so you can try different paths without having to restart the game.
Dead Reset is another great interactive movie experience from Wales Interactives. They managed to craft an interesting story/concept despite some parts of it being incredibly predictable. Most characters are likeable, Andrina Carroll does an impeccable and convincing job as a conniving scientist. If you’re looking for a shorter, replayable gaming experience this Halloween season, Dead Reset is definitely a must play; Wales Interactives knocked it out the park once more.
