Ever played a game where you can urinate on dead corpses or try and tempt zombies towards you to slip on your own piss? No me neither, but if this piques your interest then we have a weird, wacky and certainly unique title with Drunken Fist 2: Zombie Hangover. If you’re like me and never tire of games filled with the undead, because let’s face it there are loads of them, then you may want to take a look at this one. Developed by Deklazon and published by Eastasiasoft Limited, this may be a game you may want to stick on when the kids are tucked up in bed. I say game, it’s more of a unique bizarre experience.

What is Drunken Fist 2: Zombie Hangover?

As far as I’m aware the very first instalment in the series didn’t feature zombies whatsoever, but innocent bystanders instead. If you were lucky enough to play the first one though and enjoyed it, then expect the same level of silliness, randomness and downright stupidity in the second title. Here you take control of a rebel who quite clearly likes a drink or two with the premise of clearing out areas filled with erratic and clumsy zombies. The game isn’t remotely challenging in the slightest and whilst it had me shaking my head with moments of disbelief, these quickly converted to hilarious laughter. What you’re getting here is a linear adventure which won’t test or challenge you in the slightest with a very simple premise. Go as far as the game will take you, survive, string combos together and empty that bladder regularly.

How’s The Gameplay?

If you like blood, guts and alcohol then you’ll be seeing plenty throughout Drunken Fist 2: Zombie Hangover. The aesthetics have a blocky appearance with seemingly ragdolls physics with an unsteady pace of gameplay with animations in slow-mo. It is a case of just caving the head in of any walking dead that you come across by any means required. Most combat is carried out using punches, kicks and melee attacks. Weapons can be found throughout your run but do have very limited usage before they are no longer usable, so utilise these wisely. They are also extremely scarce which in my opinion made the overall gameplay less fun to play, as they were exciting to use when you had the opportunity. Zombies do strike back and do damage to you in the process, so there is a slight duck and weave element to how you need to act.

Down Your Drink & Take a Leak

If you lose health due to damage, the only way to replenish this is to down bottles of beer that are found scattered across the world. You do have to keep your eye on your bladder though as you’ll need to take a leak fairly regularly. If you fail to have a wee then your health with deplete slowly but surely. This mechanic by far though was the funniest and most memorable during my time with the game. I can’t ever recall playing something where you had to take a piss and gained achievements for zombies slipping on your mess. Health and urine indicators are displayed on the on-screen HUD, so you’ll always know exactly when to chug down a beer or unzip your flies.

Graphics & Audio

When it comes to visuals Drunken Fist 2: Zombie Hangover is very basic with blocky aesthetics throughout which were awash with warm, bright colours. Whilst it wasn’t anything spectacular to look at, there was a great variance in the different areas you traverse through. Backdrops were well blended and designed and the range of characters was well thought out. Sadly though, there are some performance issues, bugs and glitches throughout. Often you’d see objects popping through surfaces, zombies that looked like they were having a seizure on the floor and pickups that took more than one button press to collect. Frustratingly when I got to around level seven in the game, my character no longer wanted to use the toiler as the LB button wouldn’t register. This bug resulted in me eventually succumbing to a painful death and ending my entire hour-long run. Camera angles are infuriating at times which made the combat unsatisfactory and this happened far too often.

Audio comes across much better in the package than the unpolished mechanics and graphics with some witty, chucklesome narration when splitting enemies apart. With a high adrenalin soundtrack, it does engage you more and encourages you to keep going.

In Conclusion

Drunken Fist 2: Zombie Hangover doesn’t tick too many boxes for me, it’s short, repetitive and doesn’t present any reason to continue playing once you’ve unlocked all the achievements. Add to this the bugs, glitches and framerate issues that cascade throughout the game and what you have is the end result of an hour-long forgettable stint. If you’re someone who loves to bag easy gamerscore, then you can clock 1000 achievement points in an hour or so. With some more polish and potentially some reasons to extend the longevity, this would be a more memorable game. For its low pricepoint of around £6.39 though, it may just be worth your time.
