Well here we are again! I’m a gibbering wreck after playing through the latest instalment of the enjoyable, yet frustrating Overcooked series – Overcooked 2: Surf’n’Turf. King Onion and Kevin are enjoying a break on the beach and have sent us to find some new tasty morsels. Man these guys are lazy!

Introducing 12 new anarchic levels, two new recipes and three news chefs, the DLC will once again test your patience and your ability to not spike your controllers. This time around you’ll be expected to make smoothies and BBQ kebabs on many holiday themed levels including poolsides, piers and beachfronts. Some old recipes have also returned but with some little tweaks like double burgers and pineapple topped burgers. Pineapple burgers? Really? It makes me sick!

“One new thing that totally threw me was the introduction of the water pistol. The first time I had dirty dishes but couldn’t see the sink got me panicking.”

Challenges generally remain the same with moving platforms, constantly shifting sections and various pitfalls. However, the time limits and required scores are tight. I thought I was pretty good at Overcooked after playing so much but as a solo player you will be pushed to your limits. Don’t expect to go out and smash three star scores on your first attempt this time unless you enjoy the feelings of disappointment. One new thing that totally threw me was the introduction of the water pistol. The first time I had dirty dishes but couldn’t see the sink got me panicking. Thankfully it has a good range on it and it’s a bit quicker than the manual dish washing we’ve had before.

When played in a group those same difficulties will be present as it scales to the group size as usual. Extra bodies getting in the way also make for some tense moments as you toss each other death stares across the room. But that isn’t to say this isn’t the same “enjoyable” experience we have come to expect.

The new levels look nice, the new recipes are always welcome and the step up in challenge means there’s a bit more longevity to the proceedings. The original package felt a tad easy when I played it but this certainly is not.

If you like the Overcooked formula and want more of a challenge I’d say this is well worth the purchase. If not, you won’t find anything new here to win you over.
