Rocket Rumble is a multiplayer racing game where each of the crazy cast of characters are racing with their jetpacks and try to beat each other into oblivion. Akin to the Mario Kart series, you’ll be able to pick up power-ups to beat up the other racers as you fight your way to the highest score.

Unlike the traditional racing game, in order to win in Rocket Rumble, you need to score more points than your opponents. And you do that by wrecking them either by using power ups such as mines or by smacking into them with the left or right trigger. This can bounce ’em off the track to their death.

Fear not, because if you fall or crash and burn, you (and your opponents) respawn at the next checkpoint so you’re not really penalized given it’s score based. And each track has its shares of obstacles, some more unique than others. For example, on the Cobwebs race track, you’ll see a spider pop up on either side spitting green goo or chasing you.

When completing and winning races, you are rewarded with coins which can be used to purchase cosmetic items and give a unique style to your favorite character. The game is solely a multiplayer experience. While they do offer a single player racing mode, it’s you alone… against nothing. The developer didn’t bother coding in bots. In order to keep the game alive, you’ll have daily challenges to complete for extra coins and also timed exclusive cosmetic items.

The game looks great; it has a very colorful style that’s very cartoon-y. All seven race tracks are uniquely designed for a specific theme with matching obstacles. Each track provide a different challenge and adds its layer of fun for some multiplayer chaos. The soundtrack is forgettable and easily drowned out by the soundbyte chaos during races.

While there’s nothing inherently wrong with with Rocket Rumble, claiming it’s also for single players is misleading; doing a race by yourself, without any A.I. opponents should be considered a synonym for the word boring. And as a double edged feature, multiplayer matches are fun, albeit incredibly (maybe too much) chaotic to the point that, despite each player’s unique color, it’s easy to lose track of your racer.

Rocket Rumble is a decent, varied take on the Super Mario Kart recipe, but it feels pretty shallow as a whole. Solo play is useless and multiplayer matches are fun and incredibly chaotic… and that’s it. Great game for the younger gamer in the family or good for a few multiplayer rounds with friends, but the lack of depth is a disappointment. There’s some potential here but it feels more like a demo than a full game.
