The Lost Cube tells the story of Ulrik whose on a journey to recover a magical cube that was taken by evil forces leaving the villagers infertile. Using his guitar along with the cube ensures happiness will be brought back to the village thanks to a magical melody.

The Lost Cube is a 2D, one hit death, action platformer where players will need to avoid hazardous obstacles in order to collect each level’s guitar pick and open the doorway to the next level. Our hero cannot defend himself.

Ulrik can jump and double jump over through treacherous obstacles along with clinging to walls. Each level is a single screen so you can easily take a bit of time to evaluate your path; is it better to grab the (optional) pick first or open the exit? It’s up to you. There’s no real difference either way.

The game looks fine; it’ll take you through the four seasons spread across 80 levels of varying difficulty. Obstacles and hazards are easy to spot (and hard to avoid at times). The balancing can feel off at times; one normal simply level, following by another that feels it should on the latter end of the game. On the audio side of things, the game is pretty quiet surprisingly. The only noticeable tune is when you trigger the door to appear.

There isn’t inherently wrong with The Lost Cube except that it feels like the double jump works when it wants at times. I’d do the same double jump the exact same way by pressing the jumping button with the same timing, and sometimes it’d work, other times not. It’s a bit irritating because some deaths feel cheap and avoidable.

The Lost Cube is a fun, addicitive and fairly challenging platformer that plays perfectly in short bursts. Each level makes you think as to how you can get through it; although the game’s pacing feels a bit unbalanced in terms of level complexity, it won’t dether the overall experience. It’s also the type of game where you’ll tell yourself “one more level” until you hit a proverbial wall and decide to take a break. If you’re looking for a more forgiving Super Meat Boy like experience, The Lost Cube is a great alternative and definitely worth your time and hard earned money.
