The wait is finally over. On April 14, 2026, Supergiant Games’ masterpiece, Hades II, officially arrived on Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass. While the DNA of the original remains, Melinoë, the Princess of the Underworld brings a vastly different rhythm to combat than her brother Zagreus.
Whether you’re a seasoned escape artist or a newcomer to the realm of Chronos, the sequel’s console launch introduces new mechanics that can be overwhelming. Here is your essential day-one guide to surviving the Underworld (and the Surface).
1. Trade the “Zagreus Dash” for the Sprint
In the first Hades, spamming the dash button was the key to invincibility. In Hades II, Melinoë’s dash is a tactical burst, but the real power lies in the Sprint.
-
The Strategy: Hold the dash button to enter a sprint. This isn’t just for movement; many of the best Boons in the game (specifically from Apollo or Hermes) add effects like projectile reflection or speed-scaling damage to your sprint. If you try to play this like Hades 1, you’ll likely get caught in a cooldown.
2. Master the “Omega” Moves and Magick
Melinoë is a witch, and her Magick bar is just as important as her health. By holding down your Attack, Special, or Cast buttons, you charge up Omega Moves.
-
The Pro Tip: Don’t hoard your Magick. Use it early and often. Look for the “Unseen” Arcana Card at the altar as soon as possible—it provides passive Magick regeneration, which is the “engine” for almost every high-level build in the game.
3. The Cast is Now Your Best Friend
Zagreus used his Cast as a projectile; Melinoë uses hers for Crowd Control.
-
How to use it: Pressing ‘B’ drops a binding circle on the ground. It traps enemies, preventing them from moving. In the early game, use this to keep aggressive mobs away while you charge an Omega Attack. As you progress, Boons from Zeus or Hecate will turn this circle into a massive damage-dealing vortex.
4. Prioritise “Ash” and “Psyche” for Meta-Progression
When you see room rewards, you’ll be tempted by Boons and Gold. However, for your first 10 runs, you should prioritize Ash and Psyche.
-
Ash: Unlocks new Arcana Cards (the new version of the Mirror of Night).
-
Psyche: Increases your Grasp, which allows you to “equip” more of those cards at once.
-
Achievement Tip: Unlocking all Arcana cards is tied to the “Breadth of Knowledge” Xbox Achievement, so starting this grind early is a must for completionists.
5. Brew the “Forget-Me-Not” Incantation
The bubbling cauldron in the Crossroads is where the game is truly won. One of your first priorities should be the Forget-Me-Not incantation.
-
Why it matters: This spell allows you to “pin” the ingredients for other recipes. When you’re out on a run, the game will highlight the specific Silver, Mallow, or Nightshade you need. It removes the guesswork and ensures you never accidentally skip a vital resource.
6. Don’t Ignore Animal Familiars
New to the 2026 console version are the fully expanded Animal Familiars. Once you brew the “Faith of Familiar Spirits” spell, you can bring Frinos the Toad or Toula the Cat along.
-
The Benefit: Beyond being adorable, they offer utility. Frinos can block projectiles and increase your max health, while Toula can help you “fish” for extra resources. They are essential for the “Animal Whisperer” achievement and provide massive passive buffs that scale as you bond with them using Witch’s Delight.
7. Xbox “Play Anywhere” & Cloud Sync
If you’ve been playing the 1.0 release on the Xbox PC app, you’re in luck. Hades II is an Xbox Play Anywhere title.
-
Seamless Play: Your save data, unlocked weapons, and relationship progress will sync automatically between your PC and your Xbox Series X|S. If you’re on the go, the game is also optimized for Xbox Cloud Gaming, allowing you to finish those 1440p runs on your mobile device or handheld.
