I’m not sure I’m designed to play ball-breaking and rage-inducing games. Sadly, this is exactly what you get when you play Frogging Up: Frog Climb Rage Game. It is a cruel, tough, and often frustrating indie experience. Moreover, it is deliberately simple as you master basic mechanics on your way out of a muddy swamp.

Witenovastudio OÜ has developed this brutal, single-player experience. It is a 3D platformer where different floating layers must be overcome. Additionally, there are no checkpoints to save you, and one mistake can be enough to smash your controller. Yet, it is this tough approach that makes it truly rewarding. Once you master the mechanics and make it to the top, it is euphoric. Sadly, this may be too much for mere mortals, and I can see many people quitting before they reach the top.

Frogging Up: Frog Climb Rage Game has a symbolic plot.

Frogging Up: Frog Climb Rage Game doesn’t have much of a plot, but this doesn’t matter. Instead, it is the symbolic layer that stands out. Even if you ignore this layer, you can enjoy the straightforward action. Subsequently, the lack of a story doesn’t impact things.

You play the role of a frog who wears a raincoat. He lives in a muddy swamp at the bottom of a floating structure. The structure leads into the clouds, and the frog dreams of reaching the top. It is the unknown that inspires him, and the hope that a better life awaits.

Simple mechanics.

Frogging Up: Frog Climb Rage Game is perfectly safe. There are no monsters, no complex puzzles, and no tough learning curve to master. Instead, it is you and the platforms that prevent you from reaching the hallowed land. With an array of different platforms to overcome, you must judge your strength, angle, and position whenever you move. This is easier said than done, and the slightest misjudged approach will have you falling to the ground.

This is the crux of this title. It is you against your own skills. Consequently, you only have yourself to blame. This is awful because failure is guaranteed, and only the best players will make it up this weird floating structure. I’d have loved the developer to incorporate a checkpoint system. Unfortunately, this wasn’t to be, and the slightest of errors will drive you mad.

Frogging Up: Frog Climb Rage Game looks dated.

Frogging Up: Frog Climb Rage Game isn’t an ugly game by any stretch of the imagination. However, it lacks a modern polish. The frog is a little boxy, and the world is pretty sparse. The only advantage is the ability to focus on the job at hand. Luckily, it is easy to work out your path upwards as the lack of distractions lets you focus. The audio is a calm wash of “hotel lobby” vibes. This matches the carefree approach. However, it doesn’t incorporate the sense of risk and danger. As such, it is a bit of a juxtaposition.

The controls demand that you balance power and accuracy. You are in control of the camera, froggy movement, and jumping strength. Luckily, it is easy to understand each one, but sadly, it doesn’t undermine the precision and rage-inducing platforms you must overcome. Allegedly, you can complete this in under an hour, but I’m not sure I’d know how to. The sheer difficulty and frustrating gameplay may be enough to prevent many people from completing this title.

Frogging Up: Frog Climb Rage Game achieves its goals.

I admire a developer who wants to piss off their core audience. Creating a game that will make people scream is a little unusual, but this developer does it perfectly. The action is infuriating, and falling from the floating structure will make you cry. However, if you have the patience and you can get to the top, you’ll jump for joy. Accordingly, I think it’s tough, but fun, and I recommend grabbing a copy from the Xbox store!
