We all love a hit of caffeine to keep us going through the day or in my case ahead of a heavy gaming session. Here in the UK the mark up on a takeaway coffee is astronomical, but there seems to be a Costa or Starbucks within a stones throw from any built up area. Coffee, Plis is the latest indie that appears to take inspiration from games such as Overcooked and Moving Out. If you like experiences where you dash around to get tasks done, then this will be right up your street.

Don’t Spill The Coffee

The premise of the game is super simple and that is to serve customers who enter your cafe as quick and accurate as you possibly can. You’ll be introduced early on to the basic controls and how to take orders and serve your customers. Soon enough you’ll be flying around fulfilling all their needs. The control scheme is suited to the most casual of players with taking an order a simple button press.

Grabbing the order is as simple as picking up a cookie or cake, the drinks machine requires a combo of buttons to pour the drinks quicker. Gauges above the heads of people waiting gives you an idea of their patience levels, if you’re not quick enough then this will impact the service. You also have to be mindful of people entering and leaving as bumping into them with hot drinks will cause a spillage. This will slow you down as you’ll have to clear up with a mop and bucket to avoid you and others slipping over.

Perform Well For Maximum Stars

If you manage to nail out all the orders to perfection then you’ll get maximum stars for that level. The more stars you accumulate, the more levels you’ll unlock as you progress. It was satisfying to see a 100 gamerscore achievement pop each time, but it would have been nicer to have worked a little harder for these.

Visuals & Audio

Visually Coffee, Plis is pretty basic and kind of what you’d expect from a title of this calibre. I didn’t encounter any issues through my playthrough and everything appeared to run smoothly. Whilst you can select different characters from a set of four, it could have done with a little more variety here.

Also serving the same drinks and food became very repetitive and whilst levels only hover at the five minute mark, I’d like to have seen a bit more than just dishing out cookies, cakes, coffees and tea. I understand that this is pretty much what a cafe sells, but they could have mixed the options up during the level design.

Final Thoughts

Coffee, Plis was enjoyable but after a few levels it does tend to become a bit samey as you progress. Sadly the longevity just isn’t there and I’d completed everything the game had to offer within around an hour an a half. For achievement hunters though, you will rack up that sweet 1000 gamerscore pretty quickly if that is your jam.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much that makes you want to replay the game once it is over and done with. It does however offer local co-op and multiplayer for 2-4 players and whilst I didn’t test this feature out for this review, it may just persuade you if you like linking up with fellow players from the comfort of your couch.
