Plot and Setting the Scene

After the events of the first Assassin’s Creed game, Desmond Miles is rescued from Abstergo by an undercover Lucy Stillman and introduced Desmond to her team. Lucy and her team have made their own animus to train Desmond as an assassin by learning his ancestral skills. Desmond is instructed to relive the memories of his ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Ezio, a reckless young man is born to a rich family, that is until his family members are murdered and he sets out on a journey seeking revenge, and death to those responsible.

My Thoughts

Assassin’s Creed changed gaming forever, and the second installment was a massive improvement on the original, Assassin’s Creed 2 was also a beautiful example of open world games utlising a medieval setting, and how to immerse you into a living and breathing world. Due to the game’s huge success, we got to experience two more continuous stories in Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed Revelations.

In 2022, the gameplay mechanics and graphics have become a little tired in terms of what is available today, but the story still holds up, and allows us to feel very much involved, in what is a stunning setting, and wonderfully created world. Despite the games drawbacks, character study is very important for an assassin’s game, which this game satisfies completely. Ezio as a character feels very polished and combat feels very fresh and solid, even in 2022.

Assassin’s Creed 2 may not be the best video game of all time, but it pushed boundaries and despite its age is still worth calling a masterpiece in so many ways.
