A Huge Basketball Experience That Just Keeps Getting Better

There are some games that you can pick up, play for a few hours and happily move on from, and then there are games that seem determined to consume an entire year of your gaming time. NBA 2K27 very much falls into the latter category. Every year, I find myself wondering just how much can actually be changed or improved in a sports franchise that arrives on such a regular basis, especially when the foundations are already as strong as they are here. Yet somehow, NBA 2K27 manages to find enough new ideas, improvements and refinements to make stepping back onto the court feel incredibly rewarding.

That isn’t to say this is a complete reinvention of the NBA 2K formula, because it isn’t. Instead, NBA 2K27 feels like a game that understands where its strengths are and concentrates on making those strengths even better. There are meaningful additions to the career experience, improvements to gameplay, more ways to play and an almost ridiculous amount of content packed into the overall package. There are still areas that could be better, particularly around the game’s monetisation, but when you take the experience as a whole, it is very easy to see why NBA 2K27 can keep basketball fans occupied for months.

And honestly, that is probably the biggest compliment I can give it. NBA 2K27 doesn’t simply feel like something you play for a few weeks before moving on to the next big release. It feels like the sort of game you can keep coming back to whenever you fancy a few games on the court.

Back On The Court

From the moment you step into NBA 2K27, there is an impressive amount going on. The game is incredibly good at making you feel as though you are entering a living basketball world rather than simply selecting a match from a menu. There are so many different avenues to explore that it can initially feel slightly overwhelming, but that is also one of the game’s biggest strengths. Whether you want to concentrate on building your own player, manage an entire franchise, collect cards, jump into online competition or simply play some traditional basketball, there is something here to suit almost every type of player.

The big attraction for many will once again be the career experience, and this year’s Fire and Concrete campaign is a particularly strong addition. Your journey begins away from the bright lights of the NBA, taking you through college basketball and the G League before eventually working your way towards the big stage. It gives the career mode a much stronger sense of progression and, importantly, makes the journey feel like a journey rather than simply a series of matches connected together.

The story itself is also considerably more engaging this time around. There is a larger cast of characters, more personality and considerably more happening around your created player as the campaign progresses. Your character is still deliberately something of a blank canvas, allowing you to put your own personality into them, but the people surrounding them help bring the story to life. There are moments that feel genuinely entertaining, while the journey itself gives you plenty of reasons to keep pushing forward.

It is also a noticeably more substantial experience than some previous career campaigns, which is something I really appreciated. Rather than feeling like something that exists primarily to introduce you to the rest of the game, Fire and Concrete feels like a proper part of NBA 2K27 in its own right.

A New Partner On The Court

One of the more interesting additions to the career experience is Running Mate. The idea is simple enough: instead of always taking on the journey entirely alone, you have a partner who can work alongside you on the court.

That might sound like a small addition, but it changes the feel of certain games considerably. Having an AI teammate who can support your play makes the experience feel more like genuine team basketball, rather than simply being your created player against everyone else. Even better, you can bring another player into the experience and play alongside a friend, giving the career mode a welcome cooperative element.

It is exactly the sort of addition that makes me wonder why we haven’t seen more of it before.

Basketball Has Never Felt Better

Of course, none of the extra modes would matter if the actual basketball wasn’t enjoyable, and thankfully NBA 2K27 continues to deliver where it matters most.

The first thing I noticed was how much better defending feels. There is a greater sense of control when trying to stay in front of an attacking player, and defensive encounters feel less like you’re simply hoping the game allows your defender to react. Keeping your opponent in front of you, contesting shots and making those crucial defensive plays feels considerably more satisfying.

That might not sound like the most glamorous improvement on paper, but it has a significant impact once you’re actually playing. Basketball is about both sides of the ball, and when defence feels responsive, the entire match becomes more enjoyable.

The attacking side has also received attention, with the dynamic layup system providing more possibilities around the basket. Getting to the rim isn’t simply about repeating the same movement and hoping for the best. Positioning, timing and the situation around you all play a part, and while there is definitely a learning curve, getting comfortable with the mechanics makes finishing around the basket feel much more rewarding.

It also helps that the game does a good job of introducing many of these systems naturally through the career experience. Rather than throwing a mountain of instructions at you and expecting you to remember everything, the game gives you opportunities to learn as you play.

And that is important because NBA 2K27 can be quite a deep game. There is an enormous amount to understand, particularly once you start getting into the more advanced mechanics, but the depth is one of the reasons the game remains so addictive.

The City Keeps Getting Bigger

Then there is The City, which remains an enormous part of the NBA 2K experience.

I’ll admit that The City can be a little intimidating when you first enter it. There is so much happening, so many activities available and so many different things competing for your attention that it can take some time to work out exactly what you want to do.

But once you settle into it, there is an enormous amount of content available. You can take part in street games, tackle challenges, compete online and generally spend as much time as you want building your presence within the world.

One particularly welcome addition is Casual Corner, which provides a more approachable place for players who perhaps don’t want to immediately throw themselves into the most competitive side of the online experience. Being able to find games against players closer to your own level is a great idea, especially for anyone who might otherwise find the online environment a little intimidating.

There is still an argument that The City is doing almost too much. It has become such a huge part of NBA 2K that navigating everything can sometimes feel like a game in itself. But I’d much rather have too much to do than find myself wondering what happened to all the content.

MyNBA Legacy Is A Monster

If career modes and online street basketball aren’t really your thing, MyNBA Legacy could quite easily swallow up your gaming time.

This is an incredibly deep franchise management experience, giving you the opportunity to take control of a team and guide it through an enormous period of basketball history. You’re not simply choosing a starting five and playing matches; you’re dealing with contracts, rosters, finances and the many decisions that come with running a franchise.

It has almost become its own basketball management RPG, and that depth will be hugely appealing to anyone who enjoys controlling the bigger picture.

The addition of different eras is another particularly enjoyable touch. Being able to experience different periods of basketball history and see legendary players and teams represented within the game adds another layer of personality to the experience. For basketball fans, there is something incredibly satisfying about being able to jump into these different eras and see how things play out.

MyTEAM Still Has A Cloud Hanging Over It

Unfortunately, we can’t talk about NBA 2K27 without discussing MyTEAM and the game’s monetisation.

The mode itself remains hugely entertaining. Building a team, collecting cards and experimenting with different combinations is exactly the kind of experience that can become incredibly addictive. There is a genuine satisfaction in putting together a team that works exactly how you want it to.

The problem is that the presence of microtransactions inevitably changes how the mode feels.

You don’t have to spend additional money to enjoy MyTEAM, and there is plenty to do without opening your wallet, but the temptation is always there. For a full-price sports game, it is difficult not to wish that the progression system could simply stand on its own without constantly reminding you that there is another way to accelerate things.

This doesn’t ruin NBA 2K27, but it remains one of the areas where the game could undoubtedly be better.

A Visual Spectacle

On the presentation side, NBA 2K27 remains an absolute beauty.

The arenas look fantastic, the lighting is superb and the attention to detail across the courts helps create an incredibly convincing atmosphere. Player likenesses continue to be impressive, while the sheer number of animations makes the action feel remarkably authentic.

There are those moments when you stop thinking about the fact you’re playing a game and simply find yourself watching what is happening on screen. That is particularly noticeable during big matches when the atmosphere builds and the presentation kicks into another gear.

The audio complements this beautifully. From the squeak of trainers across the court to the roar of the crowd, NBA 2K27 does an excellent job of making every arena feel alive.

And then there is the commentary.

It remains one of the strongest elements of the presentation, providing the kind of atmosphere and authenticity you want from a sports game. The combination of commentary, crowd noise, music and on-court audio makes the whole package feel incredibly polished.

So, Is It Worth It?

That is ultimately the big question with NBA 2K27.

If you’re coming into this expecting a completely revolutionary NBA 2K experience, you might be disappointed. This isn’t a complete rebuild of everything that came before it. Instead, it is a game that takes an already enormous foundation and builds upon it with some genuinely worthwhile additions.

Fire and Concrete is a stronger career experience, Running Mate adds something genuinely interesting, the improvements to defence make matches more satisfying, the dynamic layup system gives the attacking game more depth and MyNBA Legacy is an absolute beast for anyone who loves managing a franchise.

Then there is everything else.

The City, MyTEAM, different eras, traditional matches and all the other modes mean that NBA 2K27 is almost absurdly packed with content. You could spend an enormous amount of time with this game and still have things left to discover.

That is what ultimately pushes NBA 2K27 towards the top end of the scoring scale for me. It isn’t perfect, and the continued presence of microtransactions stops it from being an outright slam dunk. There are also moments where the sheer amount of content can feel overwhelming, and anyone expecting a massive overhaul may wonder whether this is enough to warrant moving across from the previous game.

But as a complete basketball package, it is incredibly difficult to fault.

Final Verdict

NBA 2K27 is another impressive entry in a franchise that continues to find ways of keeping itself relevant. It doesn’t reinvent basketball, nor does it need to. Instead, it improves the areas that matter, adds some excellent new ideas and gives players an enormous amount of basketball to get stuck into.

Fire and Concrete is a particularly welcome addition, the improved defensive gameplay makes every possession feel more satisfying, and Running Mate adds a genuinely enjoyable cooperative element to the career experience. MyNBA Legacy is packed with depth, The City continues to offer an almost ridiculous amount of content, and the presentation remains among the best you will find in a sports game.

There are still frustrations, most notably the microtransactions, and some players may feel that the yearly nature of the franchise means the improvements aren’t quite substantial enough. But for anyone who loves basketball and wants a game that can provide hundreds of hours of entertainment, NBA 2K27 is incredibly easy to recommend.

It might not be a revolution, but it is one hell of a basketball game.
