Independent game developer Ayelet Studio has revealed a new gameplay trailer for Son of Thanjai, an upcoming action-adventure title inspired by the history and culture of the Chola Empire, one of South India’s most influential dynasties. The trailer marks the game’s first major showcase to Xbox players and offers the most detailed look yet at the project currently in development.
Created by a 30-person team based in Chennai, Son of Thanjai seeks to bring the world of the Cholas to life through an original narrative rooted in Tamil history and traditions. The Chola Empire ruled large parts of South India for more than four centuries and established extensive trade networks that stretched across Asia and beyond.
A central feature of the game is the Surul Vaal, a flexible, ribbon-like sword historically associated with South Indian martial traditions. Unlike conventional weapons, the Surul Vaal coils when sheathed and strikes in sweeping, unpredictable arcs, requiring players to carefully manage timing and positioning during combat. The game’s combat mechanics draw inspiration from Kalaripayattu, one of the world’s oldest martial arts, emphasizing fluid movement and dynamic encounters.
Players take on the role of Vinnendiran, a Chola prince who loses his family, throne, and identity amid political upheaval. Forced to live among ordinary citizens, he embarks on a journey through a land struggling with invasion and famine. According to the developers, the story focuses less on reclaiming power and more on personal transformation and understanding the lives of those he once overlooked.

The game world is divided into distinct regions, including fertile agricultural plains, dense forests, bustling coastal ports, and arid landscapes. This design is influenced by the ancient Tamil concept of “Tinai,” a cultural framework in which geography shapes social identity, economy, emotion, and everyday life. Each region is intended to function as a unique society within the broader empire.
Beyond combat and exploration, Son of Thanjai aims to showcase everyday aspects of Tamil life during the period. Players will encounter traditional Therukoothu performances, gather in toddy shops where local conversations and rumors circulate, and witness crafts such as jaggery production. The development team says these elements are woven into the game’s systems and narrative rather than serving as simple background details.
Son of Thanjai is currently in development for Xbox Series X|S and PC. The newly released gameplay trailer offers a first look at the studio’s vision of a historical setting rarely explored in modern video games, inviting players to experience the Chola Empire from within.
