Blitz Breaker tells the story of the cute little newly built robot called Blitz as he needs to find a way to escape the maniacal machinations of the factory where he was built. However, it won’t be as easy as he’d like. Blitz will need to use his noggin in order to think strategically and find a safe way out. Our little protagonist can only jump and dash around hazardous obstacles. Will he make it out in one piece?

Blitz Breaker is a high-speed puzzle platformer where players need to dash from start to exit of each area safely. Think of it as a gore-free Super Meat Boy. While the first few areas simply call upon players to navigate around each hazard-free area, things get hairy pretty quickly. You can also pick coins and collectibles through each section.

As you progress through each level, the game’s difficulty increases progressively. While the first few areas are pretty safe, slowly you’ll see spikes, buzzsaws, and bullets (among others) to put your successful escape at risk. Along with the dash, our little pal can also do small jumps. Given that Blitz can’t walk/run, the jumping will allow players to move slowly in the direction he is facing.

Timing is key to survival. Once launched in a direction, Blitz won’t stop until he hits a wall or dies by hitting a life-threatening obstacle. Certain surfaces can also be destroyed once dashed into and others require a key to progress forward. Keys are also treacherous items to grab. If you die, you restart the area. Thankfully each area isn’t that long.

There’s nothing inherently wrong here aside from the limited gameplay. But that’s the biggest problem with puzzle games. What the game lacks in gameplay variety needs to have solid addictive core gameplay mechanics. While the diversity of levels does compensate a bit due to increasing difficulty, not everyone will see it through.

Nothing special, but the game looks great and is surprisingly colorful. Seeing that little robot zip around is actually pretty cool My only gripe is that the play area is narrow and that’s kind of a waste of space. Levels could’ve been bigger and more interesting had it been full-screen. The soundtrack, albeit enjoyable, is quite forgettable.

Blitz Breaker is an enjoyable little puzzler that can serve as a nice distraction. The game requires players to think on their feet but also needs players to think before pulling the trigger. Sure, the gameplay variety isn’t that diverse, but this makes it the perfect game to play in short bursts. If you have a few dollars to spare and need something different, you can do worst than Blitz Breaker.
