If there was DLC for a game that I wasn’t expecting, it was for Kao The Kangaroo. I reviewed the game back in June of this year and gave it 70% and whilst it was a beautiful rendition of the original, I found it wasn’t much of a challenge. That said, it catered well for my young son who had been craving something that targets young and casual audiences alike. The development team recently introduced the first downloadable content after a gentle sprinkling of additional costumes for the game. Drip-feeding some Halloween-themed stuff to play with is fantastic timing and with a reasonable price point of £5.49, it isn’t a bad buy if you want to extend the goodness of what you have already played that little bit more.

What’s In The DLC?

For the extra expense, you’re given five all-new outfits to swap and change into at your heart’s desire alongside five new playable levels. You can access these bonus levels any time after purchase from the central hub area and play in whatever order you’d like. They take a different path from the jovial and jolly areas of the new game and are crafted in deep purple and darker aesthetics with a cascade of floating platforms and new baddies. I say new, they are essentially reskinned enemies from the main game, but it does all feel somewhat different.

How Much Playtime Are You Getting Here?

Realistically you can hammer out all five levels in an hour or less so sadly it is a little lacking when you look at the amount of playtime for your investment. The levels are identical in their difficulty level as the other levels you will have already ploughed through. This was a little disheartening as one of my main criticisms was how little of a challenge everything was. Regardless of whether you have finished the campaign or not, you can access this specific section at any time so there is a plus. Sadly, there is nothing really new or different aside from the alternative visuals and whilst each of the five presents a different challenge, it is all very familiar.

In Conclusion

I was initially excited to see if Tate Multimedia had done something drastically different with this DLC to extend its longevity. When it boils down to it though, it is five short levels tacked on to the game to extend it to twenty overall. Unfortunately, it is one of those one-and-done events though with little reason to go back through any of the levels unless you’re trading back through for extra collectables. If you loved the base game though however, it is absolutely worth picking up to own the complete package and dive into another hour of fun. My son especially loved the Halloween costumes since he is obsessed with the yearly ghoulish event. If I’m honest though, it was shorter than I’d anticipated, and you may want to bear this in mind.
