Mask of Mists tells the story of a mercenary who was tasked to find a missing Archmage. The Archmage was conducting research deep in the Infected Territory, an area that was exposed to a copious amount of magic which resulted in being invaded by creatures of the Abyss.

Mask of Mists is a first-person RPG; think of it as a Skyrim lite. In their search of the missing Archmage, players will roam around a colorful world where they’ll need find items for potions and take on various enemies. Our protagonist can attack, jump and dash; this allows players to overcome challenges coming from various foes and obstacles.

As with any RPG, you’ll also find abandoned houses to rummage through for valuable items, ancients ruins and mysterious caves to navigate through by solving puzzles that will allow you to find the exit. Collected items can either be used to serve puzzles in various areas of the world or create alchemical potions.

The biggest problem is a lack of guidance. While I’m not asking hand-holding, even an RPG as big as Skyrim allowed you to track your quests so you had a chance of accomplishing something. Mask of Mists leaves you in the dark, roaming around, exploring trying to find resources that can sometimes lead to going around in circles making it tedious.

Mask of Mists looks great with its colorful and kid-friendly visuals. Enemies look great, albeit a bit simplistic, but it fits the game’s MO; simplistic and approachable RPG. Its cartoonish look is one of the most enjoyable visuals I’ve seen this year. It does suffer from long loading times when exiting areas back to the main world. The soundtrack matches the game’s mystical and magical setting as it’s a complementary peaceful, soothing score.

Mask of Mists is a great and fun addition to the RPG genres. Fans of the genre should definitely give this game a shot; sure it’s not as huge as Skyrim or The Witcher 3, but sometimes it’s a nice diversion doing something smaller. It’s not perfect as you’ll possibly lose a bit of time going around in circles trying to figure out what to do, but it’s a peaceful game to lose yourself into.
