I’m a sucker for a Kairosoft game! I played them on my tablet years ago, and my addiction has never subsided. However, I’m painfully aware that the repetitive action, simple gameplay loop, and almost rinse-and-repeat mindset will not be enough for many hardcore players. Yet, if you want a refined and often fun experience, Pro Wrestler Story could be right up your street.

This single-player pixelated simulation game has all the hallmarks of a Kairosoft game. The UI is a little messy, and the dialogue is fuelled by simple one-liners. Moreover, the story is almost non-existent, but it still ends up being captivating and a joy to play. Furthermore, it’ll appeal to sports lovers and those people who wish to manage a host of up-and-coming wrestlers.

Pro Wrestler Story lets you build an empire.

Building a successful wrestling gym isn’t an easy task. Additionally, if your roster of fighters comprises unknown rookies, the task is harder still. This is the plot of Pro Wrestler Story. It isn’t the most captivating affair, but it works well with the core mechanics, and it offers enough depth to keep you entertained.

It is the ability to build your gym or wrestling dojo from scratch that makes this an enjoyable game. The basic training gear and underwhelming fighters require some upgrades and some guidance. Thankfully, this is where you come in. You must guide each wrestler and improve their core skills. Alongside this, you’ll arrange fights with other gyms, hold press conferences, and buy new equipment to improve your fighters.

Nice ideas, but not the best execution.

Pro Wrestler Story offers some nice ideas, but the execution isn’t always the best. Unfortunately, the idea of housing loads of different wrestlers to overcome every opponent is not required. Instead, you can power your way through many fights with 1 or 2 highly trained fighters.

This was a shame as it undermines the simulation elements. Moreover, things can quickly plateau if you focus on a small lineup of fighters. If you can overlook these issues, there are some nice customisation options and a nod to real fighters. Additionally, there are some impressive training tools and watching the automated fighting was fun. Sadly, the lack of balance for each warrior will prevent this from truly excelling.

Pro Wrestler Story = a pixelated affair.

Pro Wrestler Story delivers a classic pixelated style from a fixed isometric viewpoint. This works mostly, but there are moments where you miss key encounters. This was frustrating, as the interaction between your people is what makes this game thrive. The audio adds energy while remaining faithful to the sports theme. The music is upbeat and lively with an underwhelming but useful set of sound effects. This wasn’t particularly memorable, but it was enjoyable, nonetheless.

The basic control system and lack of time pressure make this a fun game to play. Furthermore, although the UI isn’t fantastic, the core concept is easy to master. Therefore, it is great if you are new to the publisher or this genre of games. Replay value is somewhat limited. There are plenty of customisation options, and you can have a massive roster of fighters, but sadly, the depth isn’t there.

Pro Wrestler Story isn’t memorable.

I enjoyed my time with this game, but unfortunately, Pro Wrestler Story isn’t memorable. It does enough to keep you entertained without excelling. Furthermore, there are better examples of the genre from the publisher. Accordingly, it is a little niche. However, if this has piqued your interest, you should grab a copy from the Xbox store!
