Sled Riders is a sled racing game where players have to go down a slope, collect coins, avoid obstacles, use and refill their boost and reach top position. Each race becomes slightly more challenging and your opponents more aggressive.

Each race is filled with other races looking to bump you off and also snowmen that needs to be dodged; otherwise, they’ll slow you down in your conquest of the top position. Thankfully, you have access to a limited boost in order to catch up and make up some lost time.

You’ll also come across trampolines, which are basically jump ramps, but riding over them will also slightly refill your boost meter. Each race is also filled with coins that you can pick up and use them in order to purchase items such as new boards and additional characters.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any gameplay differences between boards and characters which is mostly aesthetic items to unlock. It also always feel fun to actually getting new items just by playing. I’ll always be a proponent of games that will allow you to unlock stuff by playing.

The game looks fine; clearly will not push the Series consoles to their limits and the cartoony styling is definitely aimed at children. It’s also very colorful with uniquely designed characters. The courses are fun, albeit extremely short and also repetitive in terms of color style. The soundtrack is a generic stock score that’s just there.

While there’s nothing inherently wrong with Sled Riders, it does feel a bit shallow to a certain extent. It would’ve been nice to have the ability to pull off small stunts after crossing a jumping ramp for either extra boost and/or additional coins. It’s also very straight forward.

Sled Riders is a cutesy, easy to pick up and play sled racing game. While it’s a bit repetitive, there’s a bit of content to unlock. However, this game is clearly for younger gamers. Older gamers can plow through this easily and can serve as a nice bite-size experience between AAA experiences, but it does feel shallow. However, younger players will have a blast with this; simple, straight forward and easy.
