If you enjoy arcade and mindless action as well as couch cooperative and competitive gameplay, you may have played Tanky Tanks. This was released in 2019 and was enjoyed by a core fanbase. Roll on nearly 7 years, and we get to enjoy Tanky Tanks Reloaded. This fast-paced but short arcade title retains much of the original charm. However, it has some modern upgrades for “next-gen” consoles. I liked the layer of polish, but I’d have liked some new action as well. This wasn’t to be, so I enjoyed blowing up an array of enemies instead.

Developed by EpiXR, this arcade title can be enjoyed alone or with up to 4 players. The multiplayer and cooperative aspect is where it shines, and I enjoyed playing this with my kids. Although it was a little one-sided, they laughed as they hunted each other, and we tackled the main mode in pairs. Consequently, this has a nice, dated appeal and is great for a family night in.

Tanky Tanks Reloaded has a limited plot.

I’m not entirely sure why the tanks hate one another, but this doesn’t matter. The limited plot does little to uncover the mystery, but who cares? All I know is you must destroy your enemy before they destroy you. After all, this is war, and there is only one victor.

Don’t let the computer or your friends get the better of you in this arcade experience. Use the scenery, your wits, and a bit of luck as you dodge, weave, and attack your foes in any way you see fit. It isn’t particularly challenging, but it is fun.

6 game modes to get your teeth into.

Sinking your teeth into each of the game modes adds some depth to the otherwise puddle-deep gameplay. Each different option adds a fresh challenge to the core mechanics, and mastering each one was part of the charm. Whether it was a deadly bomb, harder opponents, or invisible machines, you will be tested.

Furthermore, you must grab power-ups, study movement patterns, deal with more intelligent foes, and overcome each boss with precise movement and impeccable timing. However, it is the multiplayer action that shines. The bickering, laughter, and one-upmanship are what make Tanky Tanks Reloaded work so well. Whether you take each other on or you work collaboratively, you will find different ways to enjoy each stage.

Tanky Tanks Reloaded delivers a pleasant modern edge.

I may be pushing my luck when I say that Tanky Tanks Reloaded has a modern edge. However, when you compare it to the base game, it is nicely polished. Alongside this, it offers 4K Ultra HD support, up to 120 FPS, and it has faster loading times. Therefore, it performs and looks much better than its dated counterpart. The audio is as loud and obnoxious as you expect. The sound effects are blunt, and there is a sense of drama and despair as you take on your friends or the AI.

The controls work exceptionally well. Navigating each tight level is a joy, and I enjoyed the cat-and-mouse nature of each fight. Furthermore, using the scenery to attack your foes or defend yourself was great fun. If you can’t play this with friends, you will get through it in around 4 hours. However, if you know tank-loving gamers, you can play this endlessly and enjoy the different game modes and the friendly competition.

Tanky Tanks Reloaded is a nod to a bygone era.

Couch cooperative and competitive gaming have long been forgotten. Online gaming has taken over, and that sense of couch gameplay with friends and family is sadly lost. Thankfully, Tanky Tanks Reloaded sticks to this gaming staple. Although I would have loved to have an online alternative, this would have upped the costs and caused more issues than positives. Accordingly, despite a few minor issues, it is great, and I recommend grabbing a copy from the Xbox store!
