It is easy to forget that a major Crazy Taxi revival is officially on the horizon. SEGA first announced the reboot back in 2023 as part of a massive wave of classic franchise resurrections, which also featured iconic names like Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Shinobi. Since then, we have already seen the successful release of the excellent Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, but news on the taxi front has been relatively quiet – until now.

The official Crazy Taxi social media channels recently dropped a subtle teaser, sharing an image of a glowing, classic taxi roof sign. While it is a minor update, it strongly suggests that the marketing campaign is spinning up, and a full-length trailer could be arriving in the near future.

Looking Back at the Franchise

Fans have been waiting a long time for a proper console entry. The last traditional release was 2007’s Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars for the PlayStation Portable, which was handled by Sniper Studios and Black Hole Entertainment. While that handheld port is certainly worth revisiting, the franchise has struggled to replicate the lightning-in-a-bottle arcade magic of the original two mainline entries on the SEGA Dreamcast.

In the years following Fare Wars, the series mostly pivoted to mobile platforms with spin-offs like Crazy Taxi: City Rush and Crazy Taxi Tycoon. However, these free-to-play mobile titles never quite captured the essence of the core franchise.

What to Expect Next

While official details remain under wraps, expectations are high for this modern reboot. The hope is that SEGA delivers a more traditional, high-octane driving experience, potentially set within a sprawling, open-world environment. If the developers can successfully tap into the chaotic, high-energy arcade spirit that defined the series over two decades ago, fans are in for an absolute treat.
