Bomb Rush Cyberfunk tells the story of Red, a graffiti writer, who unfortunately had his head replace by a cyberhead. He joined up with Bomb Rush Crew, Tryce and Bel, in order get some help in searching for his roots. They decide to go to All City in order to become the best graffiti crew around. But they’ll face some serious competition on their way to the top. The more territory they gain, the closer Red gets to discover his past and finds out what happened to his original head.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a spiritual successor to SEGA’s Jet Set series. The game is a third person skating/rollerblading action game where players need to roam around various areas of the city and tag your crew’s logo in order to take back the city. You’ll need to grind around the areas to do some graffiti at designed spots.

You can boost around to help you reach higher tagging spots. While you can obviously grind horizontal platforms, you can also grind your way up poles and the subsequent electric lines. The more tagging you do, the more you’ll attract other crews’ attention whom you’ll have to overcome with your mad tagging and skating skills. When cops are after you, you can use a few attacks to get them off your case leaving free to resume your adventure.

Boss battles are quite unique and require a bit of masterful combination of your abilities. Additionally, as you progress through game, you’ll have access to a bike, skateboard and rollerblades, along with being free to walk/run around. You’ll also need to use all your options in order to find and uncover secrets. Akin to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’s Combo letter pick ups where you need to combo your way through picking up all letters, some hidden secrets require players to hit high fives on robotic hands without touching the ground.

Included in the unlockable part of things are additional characters for story mode. When coming across a dance pad, you’ll be able to show off your skills and subsequently swapping out story based character. And further into the game, once you’ve unlocked a few additional areas, you can grab at a taxi by interacting with a Taxi sign.

The game looks incredible as it retains Jet Set’s unique cel-shading colorful visuals for a bright and enticing experience. It’s definitely one of the most color filled game you’ll have the opportunity to play. It’s also a nice change from either realistic or too cartoony stuff. The soundtrack is another high point here. It’s a vastly diverse hip-hop theme soundtrack that’ll keep your head bopping as you grind and tag.

The first noticeable issue here is the abysmal text font used for the main menu navigation. It’s hard to read at times. Additionally, another minor nuisance is that some spots which are harder to reach can be frustrating while you try to look at your surroundings in order to figure out how to reach a taggable spot.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is one of those gems that deserves all the recognitions. It’s an easy to pick up and play skateboarding/rollerblading/biking/walking/running gaming experience. The controls are smooth, the visuals are a nice change of pace, the soundtrack is a certified banger and the riding and comboing is addictive as it can be. Sure, there are minor nuisances, however they do not hinder the overall experience. If you crave the old Jet Set series or looking for a different take on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is one of the best games 2023 has to offer. Don’t sleep on this one.
