The Last Hero: Journey to the Unknown tells the story of a powerful wizard called Voidgem who has stolen all the magical relics and scattered them across the world. It’s up to a nameless knight, armed with his trusty sword and shield, to travel the world to find them all.
The Last Hero: Journey to the Unknown is a 2D action game where players, as the nameless hero, need to survive wave of enemies to clear each level. Each level has a set amount of waves of enemy types; you won’t move to the next one until you’ve cleared the current wave. Our little hero can jump, attack and block with his shield. As you progress, you’ll unlock new skills such as dodging and dashing.
Deceased enemies drop coins that can be collected to purchase special attacks in the shop on the overworld map. Although most of the skills are incredibly expensive so you might have to replay previously cleared levels to grind for extra coins.
Players will also amass diamonds that can be used to purchase potions that will serve as power-ups such as increased value of dropped coins, temporary invincibility, (another thing); just to name a few. Potions can easily be used with LB. Boss fights are actually pretty fun, but light on challenge.
The game looks bright and colorful in all of its 2D pixelated goodness. The in-game world is divided in four unique areas each with their own theme. There is some questionable design in terms of levels and also inconsistencies from one world to another. Some weird platform positioning, barely clearable gaps. The soundtrack is fair; nothing really special.
The game’s pretty simplistic; which is both good and bad. It lacks a proper challenge. More often than not, you can just stay in place and hold the attack button while enemies mind numbingly walk into your sword. Speaking of which, the sword has a pretty short range as expected, which makes some boss battles a pain in the butt if you never purchase/use special attacks. Everything is expensive which mean grinding is borderline required. Also short ranged weapons are a pain in the ass against flying enemies.
There’s something with The Last Hero: Journey to the Unknown, but unfortunately it falls short as a whole. The game offers a waves of enemies instead of traditional go from A to B type of level design, which is a nice change, boss fights are fun, albeit very easy and there’s a handful of enjoyable special attacks to purchase and use. But the questionable level design, questionable hit detection and restrained to using a short range sword does break a bit of the fun. The game is ideal for younger players in your family, but they might need some help for a few levels. If you can tolerate the shortcomings, it’s a nice, short adventure. Otherwise, there’s a myriad of better platformers available.
