World Soccer Strikers ’91 is another soccer/football game for fans of the sport, however this game has a unique twist. While most soccer/football games, the ball has a magnetic field that will stick itself to the closest player when you pass the game, this one here is physics-based.

So you have to wonder how does physics-based mechanics can apply here? It’s a bit tricky to explain, but here goes nothing. Having a soccer/football physics-based will force players to follow the ball; as if you receive a pass, instead of sticking to the player, it will bounce, meaning you’ll need to quickly run and kick the ball around. It’s definitely a unique approach to the genre and gives it a fresh appeal.

And yes, the game can be either played solo or with friends… up to a total of 7 people. While it won’t compete with EA’s take on the genre, the game does have a bit of gameplay content such as quick match, league and tournament modes. There’s also Golden Goal which is basically sudden death; first team to score, wins. One fun mechanic, and benefit of indie games, you can actually unlock new teams as you play and spend time with the game!

The game does have a cutesy visual style with highly colorful palette. Obviously, you can’t have much variety in terms of terrain, but having each terrain looking unique thanks to their color is the best that can be done. Audio wise, nothing special to return. Generic upbeat tunes covers the game and during each match, faint crowd noises can be heard.

The game’s main issue here is that the gameplay value is quite limited. Playing solo can get old quick if you try to play for long period of times. Whereas you might get a bit more with friends, it still won’t be the type of game that’ll keep you riveted in front of a TV for hours on end.

World Soccer Strikers ’91 is a fun little soccer/football with a unique twist with its physics-based mechanic. While there’s some content to keep solo players enthralled for a few hours, mulitplayer is where its at. However, in either cases, chances are you’ll move on quickly and come back once in a while for a game or two. If you’re not a fan of the sport, but looking to play it, World Soccer Strikers ’91 is worth the price of admission.
