NetEase Games and Marvel Games have pulled back the curtain on Marvel Rivals Season 9: The Mystery of Thebes, a massive upcoming content drop slated to launch on July 10, 2026. The major update introduces new playable characters, a ground-up rework of core gameplay mechanics, an iconic new game mode, and a trip to ancient Egypt.
A Mutant Murder Mystery in a Collapsed Timeline
Season 9 plunges players into a dark, high-stakes storyline within the game’s Collapsed Timeline. The legendary mutant villain Apocalypse, having witnessed the end of the world, sets his sights on hunting down and culling the gods to absorb their power. However, before he can ascend to godhood, Apocalypse is mysteriously assassinated. His death triggers a domino effect of murders among the heroes investigating the crime, setting the stage for this season’s narrative arc.
Jubilee and The Hood Join the Roster
The explosive X-Men fan-favorite Jubilee officially joins the fray on July 10 as a Strategist. True to her comic roots, she brings high-energy fireworks and vibrant energy plasmoids into battle.

Combat Utility: Jubilee’s abilities allow her to simultaneously heal allies while damaging and blinding opposing players.

Ultimate Ability: Her ultimate unleashes a lethal, dazzling firework finale across the battlefield to disrupt enemy lines.
Looking ahead to mid-season, the supernatural crime boss The Hood is locked in to join the roster in August 2026 during the Season 9.5 update.
Gameplay Overhauls: Team-Ups and Black Widow
NetEase is executing a sweeping, full-roster systemic rework designed to fundamentally shift how combat plays out in the PVP shooter.
The Team-Up System Evolution
Every single hero in the game is getting two independent Team-Up Ability loadouts. Each loadout will now be split into a standard “Base Effect” and a high-tier “Enhanced Effect.” Classic combinations, such as the fan-favorite Metallic Chaos, will also make their return under this new framework.
Black Widow Rework
Alongside the roster-wide balance adjustments, Black Widow is receiving a major, full-character rework. Developers state the update will completely overhaul her combat loop to usher in a “new glorious era” for the spy.
New Maps and Game Modes
The battlegrounds are expanding later in July with two major drops:

Thebes (Convoy Map): Following the July 23 update, players will fight across a brand-new Convoy map set in the ancient Egyptian themed location of Thebes.

Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Age of Ultron: Launching July 30, this brand-new game mode sends players into Avengers Tower and Ultron’s Data Space to clash directly with Ultron and his mechanical drone army. A series of tie-in events will also take over the Times Square lobby simultaneously.
Ignite Series Mid-Season Finals Head to LA
On the esports front, the Marvel Rivals Ignite Series Mid-Season Finals will take over Los Angeles from July 29 to August 1, 2026.
The tournament will feature the top 10 teams from four major global regions battling live on stage for the first World Championship title of the competitive year. Full scheduling and ticket information will go live on the official Marvel Rivals website on July 7 at 12:30 PM PT.
